Using a very fragmented market, in the modern age, this idea combines peer to peer sharing (which is usually done illegally) with good publicity and money for the bands.
All four main record labels have signed up to it.
The younger demographic society tend to get music for free. The use of the ads monotise this and subscriptions keep it improving.

Rather than taking artists music illegally, Spotify gives the users an oppertunity to engage in the artists by choice, to help make the money back. Cultural reasons may mean that people prefer to just buy their tracks/albums (for instance, we have TV's but we can watch it online if we wanted to).
